CCTV-10 "Experiment Site": Dynamic Climbing Rope Energy Conversion Experiment

Dynamic rope is professional equipment used for outdoor sports, and its ability to absorb impact force is crucial for the safety of outdoor enthusiasts. On May 24, 2020, the CCTV-10 program "Experiment Site" conducted an experiment demonstrating that the dynamic ropes produced by Qingdao Huakai Ocean Technology Co., Ltd., under Qingdao Hailiya Group, utilizing special materials and weaving techniques, can effectively convert the kinetic energy of a fall into elastic potential energy, thereby absorbing the impact force and ensuring personnel safety.

"JIAOLONG" Dynamic Rope

Employing unique braiding techniques and post-processing technology, these dynamic ropes offer excellent fall arrest performance and zero sheath slippage. Their performance complies with the European Standard EN892, and the products have passed EU CE certification and the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (UIAA) certification. They provide users with better protection, offering enhanced safety and professionalism.

The "JIAOLONG" dynamic and static ropes developed by the company were the first in China to achieve dual CE and UIAA certification.

In the fall arrest experiment, sandbags were used to simulate a human body of similar hardness.

In the first test using an ordinary rope, the sandbag rope was easily torn apart during the fall, suggesting potentially dire consequences if a human were involved.

In the second test, using the specially treated, high-elongation dynamic climbing rope from Qingdao Huakai, the sandbag remained intact during the fall experiment.

It was precisely the higher elongation that slowed down the potential energy of the fall, ensuring the sandbag's integrity. This climbing rope from Qingdao Huakai consists of a sheath and a core, known as a kernmantle structure. The sheath protects the core from external abrasion, while the load-bearing function is primarily handled by the core. The core itself is not a single strand but is composed of multiple parallel-laid twisted strands, ensuring that all core elements share the load during a fall arrest.

Furthermore, after undergoing processes like drawing, drying, and high-temperature treatment, the nylon fibers in the rope's sheath and core undergo physical changes, becoming slightly shorter and more elastic. Combined with the multiple parallel core strands, each composed of three twisted sub-strands, this also increases the rope's elongation.

Experiment Summary

  • Sandbag tied with ordinary rope: Damaged

  • Sandbag tied with Qingdao Huakai climbing rope: Undamaged

Conclusion

The Qingdao Huakai climbing rope is more suitable as the main rope connecting the climber to the protection point in rock climbing activities.
